Where it all began – part 3

2015 saw us pushing to get this place liveable. Many weekends and vacation time was taken that spring to get floors cleaned, painting done, kitchen installed and painted, trim work and baseboard done, electrical finished and lights hung (All mostly done by Mark!). I did do a lot of the painting of walls and floors ( check out the bathroom floor! ) . Amazingly we were able to have it ready to have guests for Rebecca’s birthday at  the end of June.   I knew I would need to find creative and inexpensive ways to fill the cottage and scoured the internet for ways to do this.  By the time we were ready to move stuff in, our house was getting filled with pieces I had collected off Kijiji and various yard sales. I jokingly call it the Kijiji cottage.   It just so happened that Wendy opened Front Porch Mercantile ( http://www.frontporchmercantile.com ) and Melanie opened Carte Blanche ( http://www.cbupcycle.com )about the same time, selling  different kinds of decorative and furniture paint.  It was providence! It was just the kind of thing I was looking for to make over some pieces affordably and in colors I wanted. I have done lots of different creative pursuits over the years and couldn’t wait to decorate the cottage and try my hand at up cycling furniture, sewing, stenciling, etc.  I will post some before and afters in a future post. Here is a look at how the spaces were coming along that spring.

IKEA counter-top, light from Front Porch Mercantile, Floor model cabinets from Kent. Painted and sealed embossed wallpaper for back splash from Home Hardware.

Eek, here goes nothing- cutting out hole for sink.

Putting kids to use- IKEA step stool

1st coats going on those 9 foot walls!

A peek at my stencilling job in the bathroom. Dresser re-purposed into a vanity and finished with milk paint. Recycled vanity mirror and bookshelf painted with 2 types of chalk paint and Fusion mineral paint.

Remember the photo of plaster dust all over the floor!! So much better! Love that simple trim- Mark did a great job!

This was one of our Kijiji treasures- came with couch and 4 chairs- Solid wood Vila brand but a little hideous. Wait until you see the after!

Next post will have some prettier photos with rooms decorated and some of the projects we attempted for the 1st time! That was the fun part of this whole adventure! See you down the road!
